About 10:30 Sunday night Cape Girardeau firefighters responded to the Cape LaCroix apartment complexes. The fire began in the bathroom in the back half of one of the lower-level apartments in the complex in the 500 block of South Spring Avenue. Battalion chief Brad Dillow says no smoke showed from the outside of the building, but firefighters found moderate smoke inside the apartment. They evacuated the upper floors as a precaution. The occupants were not home but a dog was inside. An investigation showed it may have been caused by a discarded cigarette in a trashcan. The fire from the cigarette was believed to have melted a side of the toilet bowl in the bathroom, and the water from the toilet extinguished the majority of the fire. No one was injured and the dog was safe.
