Just after breakfast Oct. 29, Cape Girardeau County Jail correctional officers broke up a fight involving six inmates. Officers Christopher Eldridge and Zachary Steward were picking up serving trays in one pod at 7:25 a.m. when they saw six inmates fighting in a separate pod. 20-year old Marcquise Taylor, 34-year old Kareem Wiley of new Madrid, Gabriel Houseman, Cedric Lucious, Derek Reed and Tyler Triplett were all involved according to probable-cause statements. Wiley tried to block the doorway and then shoved. Stewart was struck in the head by a full bottle of water thrown by Housman. While Eldridge was trying to restrain Wiley, he noticed Housman running out of the pod and assaulting Lucious. Eldridge then tried to restrain Houseman, and Wiley threw a punch intended for Housman that struck Eldridge in the face, causing the corrections officer’s head to hit the window in the booth. Stewart tried to separate Reed, Triplett and Taylor, who were punching Lucious. As Stewart entered the center of the melee, he was hit with a punch in the left eye. He then hit Taylor with OC spray, prompting him to discontinue the fight. Wiley, Houseman and Taylor were charged with felony assault of a corrections officer.
