The Van Buren mayor-elect will officially be sworn into office on Thursday. A petition filed last week with a Carter County court questioned Mike Hoerner’s right to hold office, alleging he owed more than $9,000 in delinquent taxes from 2011. A hearing was held today to determine whether or not he could hold office. Hoerner denied any taxes are owed, and he questioned why his right to run for mayor was not disputed before the April 5 election. He admits he began receiving letters from the Missouri Department of Revenue in February. Hoerner says at the hearing, the city had no proof that he was in default and none of the letters he received from the Missouri Department of Revenue said he was in default. He tells KZIM KSIM he’s glad the ordeal is over.
Hoerner won the election 121-95 against current mayor Dale Kerkvliet.
