Owner of Ray’s of Kelso, Ray Ressel, suffered a stroke last year. As a result, he sold his business as a way to remove stress from his life. Ray’s also caters events on and off-site and provides banquet accommodations through Plaza by Ray’s in Cape Girardeau. Though the sale is not final, Ressel says there is a contract to close May 1, and he expects Dr. Sonjay Fonn to take over ownership of the Ray’s brand next month. When his father died in 2002, Ressel inherited a building that once was a Farmers and Merchants Bank in Kelso that had been passed down through the family for generations. With the space, the Ressels decided to bring Ray’s back to Kelso in 2004. In 2009, the Ressel’s expanded their business into Cape Girardeau with Plaza by Ray’s, which operates out of the Plaza Conference Center. Ressel tells KZIM KSIM what he will miss most.
Three of Ressel’s four sons work alongside him in the business and will continue to work there when the elder Ressels move on.
