A man is in custody after he allegedly killed his estranged wife and shot her friend just after midnight Saturday in Perry County. A news release from the Sheriff’s Office says 42-year old Joseph J. Rutledge, of Perry County rammed a car driven by 49-year-old Mary Rutledge several times near their residence at 81 Wesley Drive off Perry County Road 844. When her vehicle was pushed off the road, police say Rutledge shot his estranged wife once, killing her. He then shot her friend 54-year old Robert Edwards, twice. Edwards was flown by helicopter to Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries. Mary Rutledge died at the scene. Joseph Rutledge was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of armed criminal action. He remains in custody at the Perry County Sheriff’s Office on $250,000 cash-only bond.
