Reports from the Southeast Missourian say that a Poplar Bluff man was shot and killed Tuesday evening after allegedly brandishing a weapon at a butler county sheriff’s deputy who had responded to a domestic-dispute involving weapons call. Butler County Coroner Andy Moore identified the dead man as 48 year old Steve Scott. Officer Wesley Popp responded to the call at a residence on Rice Road. Upon arrival the wife said Scott had left the residence saying she better not be there when he returned. Shortly after Popp’s arrival Scott returned parking his truck behind Popp’s patrol car. He was angry, would not step out of his truck and refused to cooperate with the officer. Reports say that while cursing at the officer Scott attempted to retrieve a pistol, this is when Popp fired his gun. The Missouri State Highway Patrol in investigating and Popp is on paid leave until the investigation is complete.
