A driver in England who swerved “to avoid an octopus” before crashing has been arrested on suspicion of drug-driving. Police were called and found a vehicle upside-down in a ditch on Tuesday evening.
The 49-year-old driver was checked over by paramedics before being arrested. Officers, who tweeted about the incident, said they found no evidence of an octopus on the road.
Octopuses are not unheard of in the seas off the south coast of England, but this particular cephalopod would have had to crawl more than 5 km over hills and fields to find itself in the path of a car.
A spokeswoman for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “He did a bit of a slow roll into a ditch. An ambulance went out and the driver was checked over by paramedics but there weren’t injuries enough to go to the hospital.”
AND THEN THERE’S……
The carjacking didn’t go as planned for a gunman in the Lafayette Square neighborhood of St. Louis on Monday night. He used his gun to tap on the driver’s side window of a car at about 7:30 p.m.
He ordered the 33-year-old male driver to get out of the car, then demanded his keys. According to police, the victim stepped out of the car but refused to hand over the keys. The gunman pointed a gun at the victim’s feet and pulled the trigger several times — but the gun wouldn’t fire.
The victim tossed his car keys, and both he and the gunman raced to get the keys. As they ran, the gunman dropped his cellphone, and the victim picked it up. The gunman apparently got to the car keys first, but police say he was left negotiating with the victim. He said he’d trade the keys for the phone.
After the swap, the gunman ran off without getting any of the victim’s property. Police say the victim was uninjured and they are still looking for the wannabe thief.

An Arizona man arrested for riding a Bird scooter while intoxicated is now wanted by police. Shelton Begay recently failed to show for two separate arraignments in Tempe Municipal Court, prompting a judge to issue arrest warrants for the 28-year-old defendant.
The first warrant was filed in mid-January and the second was issued February 1st. According to cops, Begay was busted last year for DUI, reckless driving, criminal damage, and other crimes. His blood alcohol content was measured at .285, more than three times the legal limit.
As detailed in a Tempe Police Department report, Begay–piloting a motorized Bird scooter–crashed into the side of a parked Dodge Dart around 9:00 a.m. The vehicle’s owner told police that Begay appeared drunk and was swerving across the roadway.
Begay apparently later fell off the scooter, which is capable of speeds up to 35 mph and is classified by police as a motor vehicle. He was arrested after failing a series of field sobriety tests. A search of Begay’s backpack turned up a 16-ounce can of beer and seven small bottles of 99 Bananas liqueur.

47-year-old Kerri Smith was arrested after she was seen chasing Dante Hedgepath out of a Super 8 Motel and across a street in York, Pennsylvania.
According to authorities, Hedgepath said he got “freaked out” and left the room – but Smith followed him, completely naked, through the lobby screaming for him to come back.
Hedgepath later told police that he got a hotel room with Smith, but decided to leave after she began “acting crazy” and saying they were going to “have kids and start a life together.”
Police found the pair in the hotel parking lot and immediately took Smith into custody in the back of their cruiser. Police said that both Smith and Hedgepath had a strong “intoxicating odor” on their breath.
