TODAY’S GENIUS AWARD GOES TO . . . . . . .
Robbers of a Columbus, Ohio Verizon store, who broke in and swiped cellphones from the store’s displays, only to realize they were for display purposes only and don’t actually work.
Police say one or more people used large rocks to break the glass in the store’s back door and gain entry.
Once inside, several phones were cut or ripped from the displays.
Lucky for the store, all of the display phones are not actually real phones and are of no value to the thieves.
AND THEN THERE’S …..
Leroy Bridgman, 57, and Marcie Young, 61, an Ohio couple whose jewelry heist was thwarted after they got stuck in a faulty elevator.
The couple broke into the store after hours and pocketed 26 diamond rings.
The duo tried to flee down the stairs to their car in the basement parking lot, but the stairs only went to the first floor, so they took the elevator and got stuck.
They called for help and the fire department had to come rescue them.
Police found $86,000 in stolen jewelry on them when they opened the elevator doors.
OR HOW ABOUT …..
Salvador Sanchez-Buenrostro, 42, a Gersham, Oregon man who tried to get out of a traffic ticket by calling in a fake 911 call.
Sanchez-Buenrostro was pulled over for a traffic violation and the officer soon discovered the motorist was driving with a suspended license.
While the officer returned to the patrol vehicle to write a citation, Sanchez-Buenrostro used the opportunity to call 911 and file a false report of a nearby shooting.
The dispatcher traced the call to the location of the traffic stop and the phone number was matched to the motorist’s cellphone.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of improper use of 911.
Police said he was also ticketed for his original traffic violation.
OKAY, ONE MORE …..
Michelle Novak, 37, who was arrested after she violently attacked her estranged husband while he happened to be wearing a GoPro camera.
Michale Novak said that as he was reaching into his car to unbuckle his kids, Michelle approached from behind and intentionally struck her husband in the testicles.
The arresting deputy reviewed the altercation caught on Michael’s GoPro camera and arrested the future ex-wife.
