Williamson County Sheriff Bennie Vick says a man has been arrested after a vehicle pursuit that began in Missouri and ended in Illinois on May 30. The sheriff’s office became aware of a vehicle pursuit when a man was reportedly fleeing from the Missouri State Highway Patrol. As the vehicle crossed into Illinois, it fled from other officers as it traveled through Union and Johnson counties. A Williamson County deputy saw the vehicle travelling at on I-57 just south of the Marion exit. The vehicle got off the interstate at Johnston City. A resident of the area called 911 to report a vehicle had been abandoned in their yard. Another resident called to report that a man had knocked on her door and offered her cash if she would drive him from the area. This caller said the man ran into a nearby wooded area when she refused to drive him. The driver was located by a canine unit in the wooded area and was taken into custody. The driver was identified as 29-year-old Erik Peoples of Chicago. He is currently being held on charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding a police officer, driving while license suspended, reckless and other traffic offenses. He is being held on $2,500 cash bond. His first court appearance is pending. More charges are also expected from the Missouri Highway Patrol.
