The frigid weather is blamed for dozens of water main breaks in the St. Louis area. KSDK-TV reports that Missouri American Water workers responded to 25 water main breaks over the weekend and nearly 20 more on Monday. Problem spots ranged from St. Ann to Brentwood to Manchester. Temperatures across the St. Louis region dipped into the single digits most of Sunday and into Monday morning. Brian Russell of Missouri American Water says the problem is two-fold: Water coming into the system from rivers is so cold it’s causing mains to constrict. And, aging or weak mains tend to break when that happens, causing water to sometimes spill into the street.
