The next big issues that the Missouri legislature may be tackling is criminal justice reform.
The Democratic Caucus and the Legislative Black Caucus have worked together to overhaul the system in a new plan they say helps to correct how they see it hurting the poor.
The proposal would also restore voting rights to felons directly once they’ve been released from prison.
They also are zeroing in on the rights of children in court by prohibiting them from waiving their right to counsel except through a process of written consent.
Another measure in their new legislation would work to help those who can’t afford bail to avoid it, if they’re not a danger to the public or a flight risk.
